Li-Fi a new revolutionary technology

What is Li-Fi? How does Li-Fi work? Know about the new revolutionary technology in upcoming year 2021. You must be using mobile internet or Wi-Fi broadband connection, which is using wireless data transmission through radiofrequency. The data that transmit through Wi-Fi is fast and effective but vulnerable to stolen by hackers. But the new revolutionary technology that has developed which is not working on radio technology is Li-Fi. Let’s dive into deeper.

What is Li-Fi?

Li-fi stands for light fidelity. Li-Fi is a wireless data transmission technology that transmits data from one device to other devices through light. Harland Haas, a professor at the University of Edinburgh, coined the term first time during his TEDx talk in 2011.

The technical experts claim that Li-Fi is 100 times faster than current Wi-Fi technology.

This revolutionary technology will work on the way the light bulb is working. It would help if you switched on your bulb and you can access fast internet inside the home.

How does Li-Fi work?

As Wi-Fi needs -the internet server, modem, and router, this technology will also work through the server modem and router, but the process will be changed at the stage of the router. Till now, the router uses to provide the internet to your devices through radiofrequency, but the Li-Fi technology will work on light. The server will send data to the modem, and through the modem, the data will be changed to Li-Fi through LED blub or LED source.

Your devices will receive data and send data from and to an LED bulb. The “photodetector,” which will receive data act as received, and other is the “light emitter,” which will send data from your device. As compare to radio technology, visible light can transmit data up to a thousand times faster.

A photodetector ->DATA (uplink)->Your device.

Your device->DATA (down link)-> Light emitter.

To send or receive data, the light source must be Active.

Advantage of Li-Fi

The major pro of Li-fi is the Speed of Data transmission. Li-Fi technology transmits data through the light, making it 1000 times faster transmission technology than Wi-Fi. One small LED can transmit 10 GBPS of data, and if hundreds of LEDs are placed, it will take multiple the speed of data by 100 times.

1. More secure network:

Li-Fi is a way more secure network than Wi-Fi. The data transmitted through light, and light cannot pass the solid structure or wall of buildings and rooms. The hacker or spy cannot steal your data because the limit of data will remain within the spectrum of light emitted from the source. The external sources cannot penetrate in your network and data.

2. Abundance of resources:

LED bulb is now a source of light for every household, building, streets and public places. The technology is already there to utilize. The only thing that is needed to connect the LED bulb with the server to start using the internet in an LED bulb.

3. Cost-saving:

The light bulb is cheaper as compared to the other source of internet. You don’t require to make a high investment after it is widely available. The blub can be used for two purposes, one to provide light and other for connectivity. Hence it will save cost.

Disadvantage of Li-Fi

1. Special Implementation required

Li-Fi is different from Wi-Fi; hence it needs different hardware implementation to set up which is not yet widely available. The infrastructure that is required to set up Li-Fi is yet to develop at large scale even in a developed country.

2. Limited ranged

The data can be received and sent only through the light, which has a limited range. The light cannot transmit through a solid structure which is a hurdle for a wide range of use. It would be best if you had many lights to work on each device. The range of the light spectrum is limited.

3. Interference via other sources

Li-Fi work on a single source which is light through a single source like LED. But when light from other source interferes in LED light it may cause hurdles in the network. Especially if you are using the Li-Fi in open space, the sunlight may cause harm to your network.

4. Huge investment

This is new technology and requires a large amount of money for research and development before it becomes used for normal people. During the coronavirus pandemic, many governments are facing the problem of finance. Hence it will not be easy to provide an extra amount for this technology.

Vision for the future

This technology will have a future for a wide range of use. The LED has great scope and will be proven effective in future also. This change has to come from the government. The government should start investing in this type of technology, so a good alternative to Wi-Fi can be found.

Use of Li-Fi technology

1. For defense and cyber-warfare

A defense is the most important part of any country. The defense complex requires a private and secure network and communication. Li-Fi technology provides a safe and secure network because light cannot transmit through a solid wall. Confidential communication can be passed through one device to another without the fear of penetrating external forces.

The enemy country always has an eye on the defence technology and nuclear technology of other countries, which require security.

2. Healthcare

Wi-Fi and cell phone are prohibited inside many places in the hospital because of radiofrequency waves. But Li-Fi technology provides an alternative to access internet and communication inside the hospital.

3. Airplanes

Radiofrequency waves are not a good option for passengers. The Li-Fi technology can work to the entertainment of passengers with the help of providing lights in a compartment.

4. Use for traffic movement

Li-Fi technology provides a large scope of opportunity on roads. The traffic signals and many roads light can help in the smooth movement of traffic. Even a car can use Li-Fi technology using the warning of collision.

5. Public Internet

the densely populated cities with street lights connectivity and high-tech LEDs in parks provide ample opportunity for internet consumption for the general population. The public Li-Fi can help the common people to access a high-quality internet experience anywhere on-streets, parks and malls.

6. Device connectivity

The large quantity of data can be transferred at high speed from one device to another. Using Li-Fi technology inside the same room will save a huge amount of time and energy, and it will help connect people.

7. Education

the campus of school and university requires secure and reliable communication. Li-Fi has the potential to connect the whole campus and provide good communication as well as speedy internet connectivity. All the devices of the school can connect using this technology. Many technical colleges in India lacks the infrastructure because of the huge cost of Wi-Fi technology. Once the Li-Fi technology becomes normal and cheap, it will help greatly for technical education in India.

8. Examination

In many online competitive exams, the testing agencies always face the problem of a secure connection for the integrity of the test. The Li-Fi is secure connectivity which will help in security and integrity of the exam. There are many places in India where the local administration has to cut the internet connectivity of the whole district for fair conduct of the examination. This proves to be ineffective as the public faces a huge problem of connectivity. With the Li-fi technology, the testing agencies will be able to maintain the integrity of examination without disturbing the general public.

Difference between Wi-Fi and Li-Fi

  • Wi-Fi stands for Wireless fidelity, and Li-Fi stands for Light Fidelity.
  • Wi-Fi works on radiofrequency while LiFi works on a light.
  • The range of Wi-Fi greater than LiFi. The range of Wi-Fi is 30-40 meter, but the range of Lifi is only about 10 meters.
  • Wi-Fi was invented much before the Lifi.
  • Li-Fi is more secure technology than LiFi.
  • Wi-Fi works on radiofrequency waves which can transmit through walls and solid structure while the light on which Li-fi works cannot pass through walls and solid structures.
  • Li-Fi can work undersea and densely environment while Wi-Fi waves cannot pass inside the water.

Conclusion:

The Li-Fi technology is its early age, but there is great scope for this technology in many fields like defense, health and education. Also, people can use the internet in public places using this technology. The technology will require a large amount of investment to implement it in many fields. It will make communication easy and effective, with security and trust. The Li-Fi has great potential to replace the Wi-Fi in many fields.

This technology can prove to be great revolutionary because its speed is hundred times fast than existing Wi-Fi technology.
