LG Velvet

All eyes are on the LG Velvet in LG ditching the alphanumeric naming in favor of more concise titles. The business first ignited a curiosity in the teasing of their latest “raindrop” camera concept on the tablet. We got clarification on the name later, accompanied by an official video that revealed the phone in all its glory.

LG Velvet Release date

Actually we’re happy that LG gets rid of the misleading brand names of the V and G show. For years both had overlapped and their common ThinQ name made them even more distinct.

Going forward, LG states that it would use more “familiar and descriptive terms to help the user catch the device’s meaning.”

The name LG Velvet is intended to invoke, as per the product, the feeling of “lustrous smoothness” and “premium softness” According to LG, these are two distinctive characteristics of the handset, possibly relating to its polished nature and the materials used in the construction.

Comments originating from South Korea initially proposed releasing the LG Velvet on May 15. LG has therefore publicly announced May 7 as the phone’s launch date.

The business will be broadcasting the LG Velvet reveal on its official YouTube and Facebook pages.

LG has also posted a new video highlighting the architecture, along with announcing the launch date of the handset. The video demonstrates the triple-camera configuration “Raindrop” from the tablet, with the three cameras grouped by their height in descending order. The video also illustrates the four-color variations the Velvet provides in Aurora Blue, Aurora Black, Aurora White, and Illusion Sunset.

LG Velvet

Design

The first thing about the LG Velvet you can note is its camera configuration. LG has opted not to participate in the clunky square or rectangular camera modules that we have been too accustomed to on phones like the Galaxy S20 series, iPhone 11, and others.

The new triple camera concept “raindrop” takes influence from a droplet of rain coming down. In descending order of scale, the three sensors are placed vertically, with the flash right at the bottom of the plate.

We see a sleek, chrome-accented frame elsewhere. The outlined view curves to the top completed offering the illusion of more properties on the displays. It is called a 3D arc display by LG because of its waterfall design which enhances its look from the sides.

The rear of the phone seems to be coated in glass, which may allow room for wireless charging. It’s not, however, a functionality we normally see on mid-range phones so we won’t be banking on it right now.

LG also revealed several interesting colorways including: gold, silver-black, gradient pink and gray.

Another advantage is that with its USB-C slot, the Velvet also maintains the threatened 3.5 mm headphone socket. The headphone jack existence indicates that LG might have on the LG Velvet its famous Quad DAC audio features.

At first sight, the LG Velvet for a mid-range system does seem pretty elegant and luxurious. Yet we do not report on the specification until we have the phone in hand

Features

LG has stated already that the Velvet will house the Snapdragon 765 chipset. It renders it a 5G-enabled mid-ranger, instantly.

Reportedly the company is aiming towards a more mass-market direction and that’s presumably why it opted on the Snapdragon 865 which is considered to be considerably more costly than the 765.

LG is not the only company that worries on certain shapes. Apple with the 2020 iPhone SE, Samsung with its inexpensive A-series models, as well as forthcoming Google and OnePlus mid-tier smartphones all point to a world where decent mid-rangers might be valued more than high-spec flagships.

Returning to the topic, no other LG Velvet specs have so far leaked. A curved display has already been confirmed in the design, and LG is likely to use an OLED panel. There is also a triple camera system arriving, we just don’t know the layout for the sensor yet.

Some believe that a dual-screen adapter like the LG V60 ThinQ would be included on the handset. We assume LG can boost interactivity between the two displays if the Velvet ends up having support for a second monitor.

Another report doing the rounds says the Velvet would endorse a stylus attachment as well. The phone won’t have a slot to hold the stylus according to an ET News article. It would be unnecessary to purchase it since it would be priced separately. Additionally, the study states that every Wacom Active Electrostatic capacitive pen would be compatible with the tablet.

Apparently the phone would contain an app named Nebo, which transforms handwritten notes into digital documents. That’s obviously why LG is bundling help for a stylus with the Velvet.

The phone is supposed to show the new Android 10 build with several up-top customizations as regards features.

Hardware

Keeping the lights on is a 4,300mAh pack, with a “low-power engineering algorithm” to prolong battery life further. This new smartphone from LG comes with dual-screen support and in addition to it, the company has also provided stylus pen accessories.

Camera

It is claimed that the Velvet comes with a 48MP triple camera configuration on the back with the main camera protruding marginally outward and the other two cameras, followed by a flash, positioned under the glass cover. The handset would even come packed with a 16MP selfie sensor, according to the new report. The handset has bent corners on all sides and LG is assuring us that rough edges are reduced. You can also be relieved from background noises while shooting a video, thanks to the revolutionary “talk out focus” feature. ASMR recording is now also available in this amazing camera.

Ports

This also has a 3.5 mm headphone jack intended to accommodate Hi-res audio playback as is popular with previous LG products, so it’s recognized for what the brand itself. The phone is fitted with stereo speakers for listening, with a Type-C port at the bottom. It comes with a 4,000mAh battery, which can enable any form of quick charging. Also, the phone is speculated to endorse the LG Dual Screen adapter, as a recent leak has suggested.

Predictions about the price

Now that we know that the Snapdragon 765 chipset features the LG Velvet, it’s clear that it would come into the mid-range price band.

It’ll have to deal with other Snapdragon 765 phones including the Redmi K30 5 G, Realme X50 5 G, Nokia 8.3 5 G, and more when it releases. They all come in at different price points, with Xiaomi’s cheapest being the under-$300 contenders.

Judging by the firm’s insistence on being a luxury handset, it could cost upwards of $500 easily. This is, for now, just a shot-in-the-dark guess, however. We’ll need to learn more information regarding the LG Velvet model, such as refresh rate monitor, wired and wireless charging data, IP scores, and so on to predict its price more accurately.
