All of us are aware of this game that we have been playing since childhood. Minecraft is a sandbox game, developed by Mojang in the Java programming language. If you are new here, make sure you check out the article on “how to allocate more RAM to Minecraft” and how to Make a Map and a Book in Minecraft: Minecraft Tutorial. We have discussed about Minecraft in details in that article. So for now, let’s get back to our topic.
Before going on to other aspects, let’s have a look at an anvil.
So an anvil is a tool in Minecraft that is used to repair and name tools. It is also used to enchant your tools, hence making them stronger and durable. An anvil follows physics, so it gets damaged when you throw it. It also imparts damage to the zombie or mob you throw it on. Now since it gets damaged, it first turns to slightly damaged anvil, and finally to a very damaged anvil and then breaks.
How to craft an Anvil in Minecraft?
First things first. To craft an anvil, you need to get some iron ore. Turn them into iron ingot by smelting them in the furnace. You need 4 iron ingots and 3 blocks of iron in order to make an anvil. Hence, in total you need 31 iron ingots (which is quite expensive if you ask me, in case you haven’t got a good mine or cave yet).
Let’s look at the steps of crafting the anvil.
Step 1: Make a crafting table and right click to open it.
Step 2: As you see the 3×3 crafting grid, place the iron ingots and iron blocks according to the image below. Note that this should match exactly as shown in the image. The first three columns should be filled with three iron blocks. In the second row, place an iron ingot in the middle column. Finally, fill the third row with iron ingots.
Congratulations, you have successfully crafted an anvil. Now shift + left click on it or click and drag it to your inventory. Hold it in your hand and right click on the ground or any plank to place it.

Things to do with an Anvil in Minecraft
1. Name your Tools
Yes, this is a very interesting thing that you can do with an anvil. You can name your stuffs. Let’s take a look at how this can be done.
Step 1: Place the anvil. Open your directory (Press e in the Java edition) or scroll your mouse wheel to take the anvil in your hand. Then, right click on the ground to place it. Once it’s placed, you can follow the following steps.
Step 2: Stand in front of the anvil. Right click on it to open the Anvil interface. It looks like this:
Step 3: Drag the name tag to one of the bars and type in a cool name in the text box. This creates the name in the name tag.
It costs 1 experience level to complete the enchant. Click on the new name tag with the added name and store it in your inventory.
Step 4: Finally, it’s time to put the name tag on your mob. Let’s say, you want to name your dog Sven (yes, that’s the coolest name for a dog that Pewdiepie has discovered). So, type in “Sven” in the name box. After that, reach your dog. Point your crosshair (or mouse) at it and right click on the dog with the name tag selected. Your dog is now named Sven, that shows up every time you point at it.
2. Repair your tools
That’s another cool thing to do with the anvil. So let’s take a stone sword as an example here. You have two stone swords, one almost damaged (red bar) and one slightly damaged. With two of them, you can have a new stone sword (with no damage). This is how you can do it.
Step 1: Place the anvil.
Step 2: Right click on it to open the interface.
Step 3: Place the two damaged swords as shown in the figure. The new sword with no damage will appear to the right.
Step 4: It costs you 2 experience levels. However, your Stone sword is now repaired, so grab it and place it in your inventory.
3. Enchant your armor and other tools
This is the coolest thing you can do with an anvil. You don’t really need an enchantment table and a lot of book shelves to enchant. Just the enchantment book, the tool, and the anvil will let you enchant anything.
First of all, here is a list of the highest possible enchantment in Minecraft tools.

So the materials you need are:
- A shield
- An enchanted book (Unbreaking III)
- An anvil
Step 1: As usual, the first step is to place the anvil on the ground. As you know, you can do this by right clicking on the ground.
Step 2: Then, right click on it to open the Anvil interface. You will see the Repair & Name menu once it opens.
Step 3: The third step is to place the shield in the left most slot, and the enchanted book in the second slot of the interface. The enchanted shield with Unbreaking III enchantment will appear in the third slot.
Step 4: Your enchanted shield is ready. Grab it and place it in your inventory. Then, press F in your keyboard to take it in the other hand. The alternative is, press e to open the inventory. Then place the shield in the hand slot and the shield will be transferred to your other hand. Right click to guard with the shield, which now has the Unbreaking III enchantment!
5. Enchanting an Elytra with Mending
An elytra is one of the best tools in minecraft that allows you to fly in Survival mode. You need some fire rockets to propel yourself and then you fly! Elytras are generally found in end cities when you loot the houses and ships.
So to enchant an elytra, you require:
- An elytra
- An enchanted book of Mending
- An anvil
Step 1: Place the anvil on the ground.
Step 2: Right click on the anvil to open its interface.
Step 3: Put your elytra in the left most slot and the enchanted book in the second slot. The enchanted elytra with enchantment of Mending III appears in the right most slot.
Step 4: There you go, your Elytra is now enchanted. Click on it and drag it to your inventory, then place it in your Chestplate slot to use it.
Enchanting other tools like swords, hoes, shovels, etc. are done in a similar way. You just need an anvil, the enchanted book with the preferred enchantment, and an anvil. The highest enchantment that any tool can take is already mentioned in the table above.
Finally, we come to the end. So in this article, we have discussed everything about an anvil in minecraft. We started off with how to craft an anvil with iron blocks and iron ingots. Then, we moved on to the things that you can do with an anvil. The things include naming an item or a mob, repairing tools, and enchanting tools with the correct enchantment books.
